What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium or zirconia post placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. After it heals and bonds with the bone, the dentist attaches a crown, a bridge or a denture to it. Implants are placed by oral surgeons, periodontists and general dentists with implant training.
Good candidates have healthy gums and enough jawbone. If bone has shrunk after a tooth was lost, a bone graft may be needed first. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes can affect healing, so tell the dentist about your health.
Implant vs bridge vs partial denture: which is right for you?
Your dentist will recommend what fits your teeth. This is how the common options differ.
| Implant | Bridge | Partial denture | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed or removable | Fixed | Fixed | Removable |
| Affects nearby teeth | No | Neighboring teeth are reshaped for crowns | Clasps rest on nearby teeth |
| Time to finish | Several months, including healing | A few weeks | A few weeks |
| Needs enough jawbone | Yes | No | No |
General information, not dental advice. The office you book with gives you its own prices.
What does the implant process look like?
Most cases follow four steps: a consultation with X-rays or a 3D scan; placing the implant; a healing period of a few months while it bonds to the bone; then the final crown or denture. Some offices offer same-day temporary teeth in suitable cases. Ask for a written plan that lists every step and its cost before you agree.
What should I ask the office?
- Who places the implant, and how many do they place?
- Will I need a bone graft?
- What's included in the written treatment plan?
- What happens if the implant doesn't heal?
- Do you offer payment plans?
And always: is the office in network for my insurance, and can I get a written treatment plan with costs before treatment starts?
How does the call work?

Dental implants: common questions
Am I too old for dental implants?
Age alone usually isn't the issue; gum health, bone and general health matter more. A consultation will tell you.
Implants or dentures?
Implants are fixed and don't move; dentures are removable and quicker to make. Implant-supported dentures combine both. See our dentures page.
Are implant grants or no-cost implant offers real?
Be careful with offers of no-cost implants or implant grants. Ask any office for a written treatment plan with every cost before you start.
Will the dentist take my insurance?
Plans differ from office to office, including Medicaid and CHIP dental plans. Have your insurance card ready and ask the office before you book. If you don't have insurance, ask whether they offer payment plans or a membership plan.
Do I have to book an appointment?
No. The office tells you its openings, the insurance it takes and its prices, and you decide whether to book. If you book with a dental office, you pay that office directly for your care.
