The basics

When do you need a root canal?

A root canal treats the soft inside of a tooth, the pulp, when it's infected or inflamed from deep decay, a crack or an injury. Signs include pain that lingers after hot or cold, pain when you bite, a darkening tooth, or a pimple or swelling on the gum near the tooth. Sometimes there are no symptoms and it shows up on an X-ray.

General dentists do many root canals. Endodontists are ADA-recognized specialists in root canal treatment and take on harder cases, like back molars with curved roots or retreatment of an older root canal.

At the visit

What happens during a root canal?

The dentist numbs the tooth, makes a small opening, removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, and fills and seals them. Most root canals take one or two visits. Back teeth usually need a crown afterward to stop them from cracking.

Most people say it feels like getting a large filling. Some soreness for a few days is normal. Call the office if swelling or severe pain comes back.

Before you book

What should I ask the office?

  • Will you do it, or refer me to an endodontist?
  • Will I need a crown, and when?
  • How many visits will it take?
  • What if the tooth can't be saved?

And always: is the office in network for my insurance, and can I get a written treatment plan with costs before treatment starts?

How it works

How does the call work?

FindDentist365 isn't a dental office. We don't treat patients; we help you reach a dental office.

  1. Call and tell us what you need

A checkup, a toothache, braces, dentures: say it in your own words, plus your ZIP code. It takes about a minute.

  2. We connect you

Your call goes to a participating dental office or scheduling line that serves your area, when one is available.

  3. You book with the office

The office tells you its openings, which insurance it takes and its own prices. You decide whether to book.

Questions

Root canal treatment: common questions

Can a root canal be done the same day?

Sometimes. If you're in pain, the dentist may start the treatment the same day to relieve it and finish at a second visit.

Is a root canal better than pulling the tooth?

Keeping a natural tooth is usually the first choice when it can be saved. Your dentist will explain both options for your tooth.

Will the dentist take my insurance?

Plans differ from office to office, including Medicaid and CHIP dental plans. Have your insurance card ready and ask the office before you book. If you don't have insurance, ask whether they offer payment plans or a membership plan.

Do I have to book an appointment?

No. The office tells you its openings, the insurance it takes and its prices, and you decide whether to book. If you book with a dental office, you pay that office directly for your care.

Who answers when I call?

We connect your call to a participating dental office or a dental scheduling line that serves your area, when one is available. We are not a dental office and we don't provide dental care.
