When should my child first see a dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit when the first tooth comes in, or by the first birthday. After that, most children go every six months.
Pediatric dentists are ADA-recognized specialists with extra training in treating babies, children, teens and children with special needs. Many family dentists see children too.
Pediatric dentist vs family dentist: which is right for you?
Your dentist will recommend what fits your teeth. This is how the common options differ.
| Pediatric dentist | Family (general) dentist | |
|---|---|---|
| Sees | Children and teens | All ages |
| Extra training | 2 to 3 years after dental school | General dentistry |
| Good for | Young children, anxious kids, special needs | Families who want one office |
| Medicaid and CHIP | Ask the office | Ask the office |
General information, not dental advice. The office you book with gives you its own prices.
What happens at a child's first visit?
The first visit is short. The dentist looks at your child's teeth and gums, often with your child on your lap, cleans the teeth, and shows you how to brush. They'll talk about fluoride, thumb-sucking, bottles and diet.
Later checkups may include X-rays, fluoride varnish and sealants, a thin coating on back teeth that helps prevent cavities.
What should I ask the office?
- Do you see children my child's age?
- Do you accept my child's Medicaid or CHIP plan?
- Can I stay with my child during the visit?
- Do you have after-school appointments?
And always: is the office in network for my insurance, and can I get a written treatment plan with costs before treatment starts?
How does the call work?

Children's dentists: common questions
Are baby teeth worth fixing?
Yes. Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth and help children eat and speak. A cavity in a baby tooth can cause pain and infection.
What if my child knocks out a tooth?
Don't put a knocked-out baby tooth back in. For an adult tooth, follow the steps on our emergency dentist page and call right away.
Is children's dental care covered by Medicaid?
Yes. Every state covers dental care for children enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP. Ask the office whether it accepts your child's plan.
Do I have to book an appointment?
No. The office tells you its openings, the insurance it takes and its prices, and you decide whether to book. If you book with a dental office, you pay that office directly for your care.
Who answers when I call?
We connect your call to a participating dental office or a dental scheduling line that serves your area, when one is available. We are not a dental office and we don't provide dental care.
